5th Grade Classroom
Monday-Thomas TUESDAY-FIELDS WEDNESDAY-ABNER THURSDAY-LINDSEY FRIDAY-HAMILTON
Directions for Week 1:
1. Get the 3rd Grade Books. Turn to P. 36. The books are numbered. Make sure you get the book that matches your number.
2. Listen to the 2 Tracks of "Make New Friends"
3. Learn the song by following the contour or the shape of the melody line. Answer questions about what direction the melody goes and get tickets for the drawing at the end of the month.
4. Sing "Make New Friends" a few times until you are confident.
5. Learn the hand-clapping pattern that goes with the song.
6. Practice with a partner until you feel confident. Say the words of the song while you are practicing the hand clapping pattern. Start slow. After you think you have the pattern, you can try to do the song up to tempo. After practicing for about 5 minutes, try practicing with a new partner. When everyone thinks they have it go back to your seat.
7. Put up the books. Start with the last person.

1. Review what we learned last week.
2. Form an outer circle and an inner circle, with the same number of people on the outside as the inside. If you have an uneven number, I will join the circle.
3. Sing "Make New Friends" with the hand clapping pattern.
4. When the song is over, share with your partner 1 thing that they do not know about you.
5. When you are done sharing, everyone in the outside circle will move one person to their right. The inside circle stays in place.
6. See how many new friends you can make.

1. Birthday Celebration for July and August. Birthday people will pick from 3 choices how they want to celebrate.
2. Review what you learned from last week.
3. Get in 2 circles. Share and sing until you get all the way around the circle.
4. Go back to your seats and try singing "Make New Friends" in a round.
5. Turn in your tickets you earned this month for the DRAWING!
Directions for Week 4:
1. Review what you learned last week.
2. Sing "Make New Friends in a 4 part round.
3. Listen to a new version of "Make New Friends" with more verses.
4. Try singing the new verses with the video.
5. Listen to their round at the end. How many verses did they sing in the round? How many groups were singing? How many times did each group sing the song?
Directions for Week 5:
1. Review what you learned last week.
2. Break up into your 4 groups. Work together to create a new verse for “Make New Friends”. Write your lyrics down on a sheet of paper. You want the last word of the first line to rhyme with the last word of the second line. Keep in mind that the theme is friendship, helping others, and making the community, state, world a better place.
3. Try singing your new verse with the melody. If you have time, make up another verse. Every person on your team will get a ticket for each verse you write.

5. Break up into two groups. Sing and rap the new hip hop version of "Make New Friends", in a 2 part-round.
6. What happened at the end? Break up into 3 groups and try the ending.
Directions for Week 5:
1. Review from last week.
2. Break up into your 4 Groups, then pair off. Try the hand clapping pattern with verse 1 & 2 that I taught you.
3. Make up a new hand clapping pattern or movement for the rap section for "Make New Friends". The new part should last for 2-8 beat counts.
4. Try to perform the entire song with the song. Do the original hand clapping pattern with verse 1 & 2 and perform you and your partner's chosen hand clapping pattern or movement with the rap section.
5. How did you do? Practice more to improve.

2. Get with your partner. Review what you made up last week. Finish up, if you haven't finished.
3. Everyone practice with the music.
4. Take turns presenting the 2-8 counts you made up to the class.

4. Listen to the "Found Sound Jam". Try tapping your rhythm part on your legs or hand.
Directions for Week 5:
1. Review what you learned last week.
2. Divide into two groups. 1/2 of the group will get drums and the other 1/2 will get triangles. Follow the procedure for getting instruments.
3. Perform the "Found Sound Jam" to "Make New Friends".
4. Groups will switch instruments and perform the "Found Sound Jam" again.
5. If you have extra time, try it again.
6. Put up your instruments calmly and carefully.
Directions for Week 6:
1. Review what you learned last week.
2. Practice drawing 4 Quarter notes (ta) and get a stamp.
3. Practice drawing 4 Eighth notes (ti ti) and get a stamp.
4. Practice drawing 4 Quarter rests (sh) and get a stamp.
5. After you have done steps 2, 3, & 4, get a ticket.
Directions for Week 7:
1. Birthday Celebration. Birthday people choose which birthday song we do.
2. Compose your own 2 Measure rhythm ostinato, using Quarter notes, Eighth notes, & Quarter rests.
3. Write the syllables that match the symbol under the box. (Ta, Ti Ti, Sh)
4. Choose which instrument that you would like to use to play your ostinato and write it on your paper.
Choices: Woodblock, Tone Block, Tick Tock Block, Guiro, Claves, Drums, Cabasa, Cowbell, Agogo or Maracas.
5. Get your page stamped and get a ticket.
6. Go get the instrument you chose and take it to your seat. Practice your ostinato quietly for a few minutes.
7. Everyone play your ostinato at the same time with the "Make New Friends" play along.
8. Put your tickets in for the monthly drawing.
